Ok, guys. I think alot of you have questions about edonkey and how to downloading stuffs, so poses your questions here and I and other members will try our best to help you out, but first please follow these general tips.

1. click on the yellow question mark and see what your id number is. If it's low in the hundred, you might have a problem. Now try to connect to some public servers. Once you have connected, click on the question mark to check your id number again. If you still have a low number then you have a problem. Possible Solution: If you have a firewall please allow edonkey to use all tcp and udp ports, and I do mean all. By tracing my packet requests, I found out that edonkey was using other ports besides 4661,4662,4665 to connect and other ports during transfer, so save yourself some grieves by opening all ports for edonkey. Remember only edonkey not some other applications or you will let yourself open to an attack. If you have a router then first you need to open tcp ports (4661,4662), udp ports (68, 4665). If you still have low id then do some tracing and open other ports as necessary.

2. In downloading screen, if the status is still looking for a long time then please follow tip 1. The other answer is that file is unavailable because the user whom has that file is not connected. So if you have a high id in the million then this unavailability is the probable answer.

That's it for now. Fire your questions away.

Thanks Tex for starting this thread and helping out. Regarding port 68 UDP, I that's an outgoing port used by the client and that port is randomly assigned so it maybe different the next time you start Edonkey. Normally, the router only blocks incoming ports and not outgoing ports but if you're running a firewall program it may block outgoing ports as well so you need to unblock outgoing ports.

There's one trick to recover a file stuck at "Looking" even though the Transferred count is >= Size count. That means the whole file has been downloaded but edonkey is confused and thinks it needs to d/l more parts.

To recover the file, go to the Edonkey temp folder (default to C:\Program Files\edonkey2000\temp) and look for the .part file with the same Size as the stuck file. Copy & paste this file to the Incoming folder (default to C:\Program Files\edonkey2000\incomming), rename the file to what it's supposed to be, open it and make sure it plays OK (check the end and make sure it's complete). After that, go back to Edonkey, select the file, right click->Cancel the download. This will delete the .part file from the temp folder.

Sometimes, just by exiting and starting Edonkey again will change the status from "Looking" to "Completed" so you may want to try this first. If it doesn't work then go back and try the above.

What OS are you currently running?. Do you get application freezing after the message or you can close and run its again. More details will help us troubleshoot your problem better.

WinNT40(SP5) and Win2000(SPmax) have the same problem. After pres cancel, I still run and use other parts of this forum. I have also installed .Net frame into these system. Does it make problem ?

I'm not familiar with these OS so no help from me there, but I'm running XP Pro which is based on the Win2K core. Edonkey ran very stable no runtime error msg. There may be some conflict with system resources that caused edonkey to become corrupted. So everytime you moved your mouse over the tool bar, this runtime error occurred. First thing to try is to deinstall edonkey and install it again to see if that will solve the problem.

thanks very much for your advice and sorry for this. My error is not with eDonkey, it occured with this FORUM. Maybe I posted my question in wrong place.

If that is the case then probably your Java Runtime VM is somehow corrupted. If you are using IE then go to microsoft and reinstall it.

I have a router and have open tcp ports (4661,4662), udp ports (68, 4665). But still have low id tht is less than 100.
How do I do some tracing to open other port?
Please help

Do you use a firewall program besides your router. If you have a firewall program you also need to let edonkey uses those above ports also. Does Win2K Pro have a firewall built in liked XP?. Another thought is if you are connecting thru VuThu's servers then you need to open tcp 4771 port also. He setups his server thru this port. This is the strongest possibility that why you got a low id.

Thanks for answering so quickly.
I don't have a firewall program besides my router. I don't think that windows 2000 pro has a firewall built in.
however, I haven't open tcp 4771. I hope this is why I got low id like you say. I am at work right now. Will try to open port 4771 at home.
Thanks a lot Texguy

You're welcome. I think that is the problem, since standard edonkey server uses 4661 port, but VuThu set his port at 4771.

My connection is working now.
I have open port 4771 but I have also change the ip address
4662-4662 TCP --->192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.101
I have linksys router.
Anyway thanks a lot to everyone that helps me.
